Insurance inspection software: how to evaluate it
Insurance inspection software lets an insurer inspect a vehicle or property from photos and video instead of a site visit, and turns what the camera sees into a decision: issue the policy, settle the claim, or refer it to a person. Most products look alike in a demo. The differences that matter show up in production: whether the photos can be trusted, how accuracy holds up on your own book, and whether the result lands in your systems without re-keying.
What insurance inspection software does
- Pre-inspection and break-in inspection: records a vehicle’s or property’s condition before cover starts, so damage that already exists is excluded from later claims.
- Claims assessment: finds, locates and grades damage and produces a first estimate, so straightforward claims settle quickly and adjusters work from structured evidence.
- Fraud and integrity checks: confirms the images are genuine, current and of the right asset.
- Decisioning: applies the insurer’s rules to approve, reject or refer.
The customer usually uses a self-inspection app; the insurer buys the software behind it. For how the customer side works, see Car insurance inspection app: how it works.
Seven things to evaluate
1. Capture integrity
If customers can upload old photos or someone else’s car, the quality of the AI doesn’t matter. Ask for live, guided capture only, location checks, timed sessions, VIN and odometer reading, and comparison against earlier inspections of the same asset.
2. Accuracy measured in production
Ask for figures from a live insurer, over months, on real volumes. At HDFC ERGO, mean accuracy on break-in inspections rose from 83% to 98% between FY21 and FY24, while volume grew from 52,819 to 196,619 inspections. Read the HDFC ERGO case study.
3. Accuracy of what
Detecting damage, locating it on the right panel, grading severity and pricing the repair are different tasks with different error rates. Ask for each separately.
4. Speed and completion
Time per inspection decides whether customers finish. HDFC ERGO’s inspections fell from 8 hours to 5 minutes; Zurich’s customers in Indonesia complete theirs in under 5 minutes through an encrypted link. Read the Zurich case study.
5. Decision rules you control
The software should apply your underwriting and claims rules, not a vendor’s. At Zurich Indonesia a rules engine approves, rejects or refers each proposal.
6. Integration
Results should flow into the core, claims and policy systems without re-keying. Check for API access and existing connectors: CamCom’s assessment is available inside Duck Creek’s claims offering in Asia-Pacific and integrates with Guidewire and Salesforce. At SBI General, the assessment feeds third-party estimating, and more than half of cases go straight through.
7. Audit trail and compliance
Every decision should trace back to the images, time and place it rests on, for every inspection rather than a sample. Check where data is stored and whether residency can be set per market. In India, motor losses above ₹50,000 still need a licensed surveyor, so the software should hand that surveyor a complete evidence record. Can AI damage assessment replace surveyors?
A quick checklist for vendor calls
- Live capture only, with location, time and VIN checks?
- Production accuracy from a named insurer, over at least a year?
- Accuracy broken down by detection, location, severity and cost?
- Median time per inspection, and completion rate?
- Your rules, configurable without the vendor?
- Connectors for your core system, or a documented API?
- Full audit trail and configurable data residency?
CamCom offers this for insurers as Vernier by CamCom: one assessment layer from pre-inspection through claims and settlement. For how the same technology works for dealerships and fleets, see AI vehicle inspection.
Common questions
What is insurance inspection software?
Software that lets insurers inspect vehicles or property from customer photos and video instead of a site visit, assess damage, check the images are genuine and turn the result into an underwriting or claims decision.
Is an insurance inspection app the same thing?
The app is what the customer uses to capture photos. The software behind it does the assessment, fraud checks, decisions and integration with the insurer’s systems.
How accurate is AI inspection for insurance?
It depends on the vendor and the task. In production at HDFC ERGO, mean accuracy on break-in inspections rose from 83% to 98% between FY21 and FY24.
How long does an inspection take?
A few minutes. HDFC ERGO’s fell from 8 hours to 5 minutes; Zurich Indonesia’s take under 5.
Does it integrate with Guidewire or Duck Creek?
CamCom’s assessment integrates with Guidewire and Salesforce and is available inside Duck Creek’s claims offering in Asia-Pacific. Ask any vendor for named integrations, not just an API.
